Gletsch

Gletsch lies in the middle of a wild mountain landscape shaped by the power of water. Water power in the form of glacier ice, torrents, rain and snow have shaped nature.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Gletsch became an important Alpine hub with connections to Brig, Andermatt and Meiringen.

The Glacier Express made Gletsch station world-famous between 1930 and 1981. Since the opening of the Furka Base Tunnel, railroad enthusiasts have been campaigning tirelessly to ensure that the tracks of the Furka mountain line are not demolished. In summer 2010, steam trains with restored rolling stock ran from Realp to Oberwald for the first time. This means that the historic Glacier Express route is once again open to traffic.

The canton of Valais, the municipality of Obergoms and the Furka-Bergstrecke steam railroad are committed to Gletsch. The hidden treasures in and around Gletsch are made accessible to visitors. Descriptions of the various attractions are available at the InfoPoint. Gletsch offers all visitors, from package tourists to individualists and families, a genuine experience in the magnificent world of the Central Alps.
